St Petersberg is a beautiful city that is very European and less Russian from our perspective. You can see the Venice like canals that wind throughout the city and the recently reconstructed Cathedral of Spilled Blood built over the place where one of the czars was mortally wounded when a university student threw a bomb into his carraige as he was traveling along the street. Within the cathedral is a monument to this czar amidst the breathtaking mosiacs and gilded iconostasis.
In some of the cathedrals like this Cathedral of Kazan photos are not allowed even though it is a beautiful and as ornate as the others.
Note the couple dressed very behind the times in the front of the cathedral, we ate breakfast with them across the street at a Russian fast food establishment.
Our photographer was very discrete.
Another of the cathedrals we saw in St Petersberg is called St Isaac's Cathedral.
It seems that most of the cathedrals are less for worship than for a tourist attraction and tourists they do attract in flocks. 
We climbed the stairs for a bird's eye view of the city.
We could see ancient hieroglyphics from way up there much like those we see at Lake Powell. Can you find them, too?
